Participating entities:
UNDERGY brings together the participation of 6 expert companies and 9 leading research groups that combine their synergies to cover the entire value chain in each of the fields of knowledge required for the execution of this multidisciplinary project.
Objective:
Electric power must be supplied in accordance with demand. This is the Achilles’ heel of renewable electricity due to its fluctuating nature. Incorporating renewable energy sources into the electricity system is limited by the difficulty of managing generation and the complex adaptation needed to meet demand both in the short term (daily dispatch) and the long term (seasonal). Therefore, efficient energy storage will be a fundamental pillar of the energy transition, as it will allow renewable generation and energy demand to be balanced. The deployment of renewable generation planned in Spain for the coming years will require the efficient integration of seasonal storage systems.
Furthermore, aligning renewable energy generation with energy demand will require a comprehensive management system that enables the use of excess renewable generation, storing it safely for the environment and efficiently in technical and economic terms.
To achieve this, the UNDERGY project proposes to research the technological foundations for developing new competitive systems for stationary underground energy storage associated with renewable energy sources, using green hydrogen to balance and advance towards a Spanish electricity system that operates as a green, intelligent, and environmentally sustainable grid, avoiding the generation of pollutants.
